Project Picoballoon

We’re an early-stage startup tackling one of the biggest challenges in climate science - bridging the global weather data gap

At Project Picoballoon, we’re building the next generation of atmospheric monitoring with ultra-light, solar-powered balloons that autonomously travel the globe, gathering real-time weather data at a fraction of the cost of satellites.

Our mission is clear: make high-quality environmental data accessible, affordable, and scalable for researchers, governments, and communities worldwide. By revolutionizing climate monitoring, we’re not just improving weather prediction, we’re providing critical information for climate resilience and disaster prevention.

Key responsibilities
  • Prepare, execute, and monitor high-altitude balloon launches.

  • Organize and maintain launch equipment, including balloons, payloads, gas storage, and filling systems.

  • Assess weather conditions and ensure launches meet safety requirements.

  • Coordinate with engineering and marketing teams on larger launch events.

  • Work with local authorities to secure permissions for launch sites.

  • Coordinate with partners worldwide to arrange pilot projects and testing flights.

  • Maintain detailed records of launches, including flight conditions and outcomes.

Required skills and experience
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work outdoors and perform physical tasks during launch operations.

  • Strong communication skills for coordinating with partners, authorities, and team members.

  • Problem-solving mindset, especially in high-pressure situations.

  • Basic technical understanding of balloons, GPS tracking, and weather conditions (can be learned on the job).

  • English proficiency (B2 or higher) for writing documentation and reports.

Preferred skills
  • Previous experience with technical projects, student engineering teams, or outdoor fieldwork.

  • Understanding of weather patterns and balloon launch planning.

  • Experience with safe handling of pressurized gases.

About the team

From building a crisis response website for a government to winning a U.S. Navy challenge and launching a global innovation platform - we’ve tackled big problems others overlooked or hesitated to solve.

We’re a hands-on team that values results over titles. If you care about real impact you’ll fit right in. Let’s build something meaningful together.
